Thousands of people who have never met in the real world swarm out on virtual treasure hunts when playing online games. Remote Riga is a staging of such a game in the real city where spectators become both the protagonists and the gamers. With the headphones on we let ourselves to be guided from a remote perspective by a synthetic voice familiar from GPS navigators or airport announcements. Our minds and decision making mechanisms are slowly replaced by artificial intelligence and the city around us gradually turns into a personal film. As dozens of individuals observe each other the swarm breaks down into ever-smaller units. Are we all hearing the same words?
Performance is rewritten and adapted for each particular city where it’s presented.
Stefan Kaegi about the most satisfying aspect of creating Remote X: As much as it is made as an immersive experience, I also enjoy watching it from outside as a kind of art in public space that appears and disappears within minutes. Little gestures of 50 people sharing a secret turn the city in an exciting place where unpredictable things can happen . . .
About artist
Rimini Protokoll is an artistic collective of Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi, and Daniel Wetzel working since 2000 in the area of devised documentary and reality theatre and focusing on continuous development of the theatre tools to allow for unusual perspectives on our reality.

This is a walking performance that includes physical activity. Not suitable for people with walking difficulties. Please arrive for the performance at least 15 minutes before it starts. We recommend taking public transport (bus No 20 to Matīsa kapi, bus No 13 to Vietlavas iela or train to Vagonu parks) as the ending point is not the same as the starting point.
